Rugs from Racha is a social enterprise, the main idea of which is to create a small workshop in Upper Racha, Oni, where anyone can learn hand-knitting technologies. Rugs have been woven in every family since the Bronze Age in Georgia.
Unfortunately, with the development of technology, this culture and tradition have been lost and weaving has shifted to factories. The mission of the social enterprise is, on the one hand, to raise and popularize handicrafts in a highly developed and technological world, and, on the other hand, to empower local women in Oni and to acquire a profession for them. The enterprise in turn will support the tourism sector in the region and will offer visitors interesting workshops.
The author of the idea, Ana Jeladze, was interested in handicrafts from the age of school: “After graduating, I returned to Oni and started working at a local art school, teaching children to weave rugs. At the same time, I decided to start an enterprise where even the elders could learn how to weave rugs. ”Anna’s idea has gained a lot of interest in the region and they are waiting with a great interest for the enterprise to start.
